Before you start, it is important that you understand this key principle regarding SketchUp subscriptions:
- A SketchUp subscription is tied to a named user (Trimble ID) and cannot be freely transferred between users. [help.sketchup.com]
- BUT model files (.skp) are completely portable and can be shared or moved independently of the license. [forums.sketchup.com]
A few example scenarios when you might need to do this are:
- You have a new subscription and you want to transfer your SketchUp models from another subscription (using a different Trimble ID linked to a different email)
- A business has multiple seats of SketchUp Pro and team members need to share files.
- Employee leaving a company and the drawings need to be passed to a replacement (new subscription user)
Option 1:
The easiest way is to use Trimble Connect which is included in every SketchUp subscription. Even SketchUp for Web which is free, has access to Trimble Connect (basic) and saves models automatically to Trimble Connect.
To learn how to use Trimble Connect within SketchUp to share, collaborate and transfer SketchUp files, please refer to the following articles:

Option 2:
Save your Sketchup files to a folder on your desktop and import the files after signing in to the new subscription.
Method A — From the Welcome screen
- Launch SketchUp
- Click Open File
- Choose My Device
- Browse to your desktop folder
- Select your
.skpfile → click Open
Method B — If SketchUp is already open
- Go to File → Open
- Browse to your desktop folder
- Select the
.skpfile → click Open
- You don’t need to “import” a
.skpfile to open it - Opening creates a new session with that model
Importing a file into an existing model
Steps
- Open your current SketchUp model
- Go to File → Import
- Select the file from your desktop
- Choose file type (e.g.
.skp,.dwg,.jpg) - Click Import
